Royal Visit

Monday 9th May 2016 saw HRH The Princess Royal visit the centre to officially open the newly refurbished Sport England Pony Block and teaching area.

Princess Anne arrived on a very sunny afternoon and was escorted on a tour around the centre by Jane Cherry.

The tour included meeting some of the horses on the aisle and a visit to the classroom, where she watched some of our RDA riders being put through their paces, testing their knowledge of points of the horse. This was followed by a demonstration of chiropractic techniques by our visiting chiropractor Zoe. The princess seemed very interested in how we look after our horses.

Once she had been around the outside of the centre she came into the indoor arena and was given a front row seat to watch some of our riders show off their skills. The first display was a drill ride by some of our adult riders, with a variety of difficulties.

Next was a musical dressage by Nicola Jarvis on the wonderful Tom, and this was followed by pony games for some of our younger riders.

The demonstrations really showed that a disability doesn't need to hold you back. Following the demonstrations Princess Anne met the riders and spent some time talking with each and presented them with a commemorative rosette, carried for her by one of our younger riders Rachel Robson.

She then met a number of others including trustees, staff, volunteers, parents of some of our riders, supporters and suppliers of the centre.

It was also a great opportunity for some people to be given awards in recognition of the hard work they do on behalf of the centre.

Outstanding Volunteer Awards were given to:

Alex Tait, Suzanne Bacon, Ron Taylor, Elaine McNally, Gilda McCall, Ian Dodds, Barbara Dawber, Zoe Forster, Daniel Sheraton, Marilyn Potts, Alison Gillies, Lucy Bell, Rebecca Lowes, & Sharon Boyle

Outstanding Service Awards were given to:

Terence & Margaret Pearson, Jane Cherry, Elizabeth Gandy & Louise Forrest

Horse & Pony Long Service Awards were also given to Strider & Tom, as without the horses we wouldn't be able to do any of the work we do.

To finish the day HRH The Princess Royal was presented with a small posy by young rider Jasmine Ather-Elder as she left the arena.
