Latest News:

On Saturday 19th May 2018 the last of our 'founders' sadly passed away.
Mr Terry Pearson joined the group in 1974 and was instrumental in getting funding to build the Washington Riding Centre. He went on to project manage the build and saw its opening in 1977. Terry continued to assist in running the centre with Dr Strang and his wife Norah. Although he had retired he still visited every day.
His funeral is on Friday 1st June at Saltwell Park Crematorium, Gateshead at 9.45am. Then afterwards at Heworth Golf Club. Everyone is welcome to pay their respects.
He was an integral part of the Tyne and Wear RDA Group and will be very much missed.

Who are we?

We are the home of the Tyne and Wear RDA Group.

Our group operates from our purpose built, BHS Approved Riding Centre, seven days per week, all year round. We have been in Washington since 1977, having originated in South Shields in 1964.

We currently provide approximately 130 children and adults with a range of disabilities and learning difficulties with riding lessons every week.

Throughout the years the benefits of Riding for the Disabled activities have become increasingly recognised by medical and educational establishments as a highly effective therapy which:

  • Contributes to the improvement of a wide range of medical conditions
  • Provides a positive, unique and enjoyable form of therapy
  • Brings a new dimension to restricted lives
  • Encourages independence
